The Woven Farmstead

A Certified Naturally Grown farm located in Muskegon, MI, dedicated to cultivating a diverse range of vegetables, cut flowers, fresh herbs, small grains, and collaborative value-added products. In addition to its vibrant crops, the farm raises sheep and rabbits for fiber and poultry and waterfowl for fresh, nutrient-rich eggs.

Everything at Woven is grown and raised using chemical-free, biodynamic practices, with a steadfast commitment to no-till and no-spray methods. By working harmoniously with the land and its natural ecosystem, the farm fosters a sustainable approach to agriculture that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and ecological balance.

At its heart, Woven operates at a human scale, focusing on nurturing connections between people, nature, and nutrition. Through food, farming, and wellness, Woven engages the community in meaningful ways that inspire stewardship, learning, and growth.

History of the farm

The Woven Farmstead began as a vision born from resilience and a deep love for sustainable agriculture. In 2019, I unexpectedly lost my position as a farm manager and educator due to an organization-wide layoff. With no plan, no resources, and my very last paycheck, I took a leap of faith. That leap led me to lease a small urban plot, where Woven’s journey began.

Those first two seasons on leased land were a humbling yet glorious experience. I navigated the steep learning curve of starting a farm from scratch while juggling the challenges of limited resources and space. Despite these hurdles, Woven flourished, finding success and a growing community of supporters. By the end of the second season, it was clear that the farm needed a permanent home to expand its potential.

In the fall of 2021, My husband and I purchased a piece of property to establish the farm permanently. Through the winter, we poured our hearts into prepping the land for the upcoming growing season, only to face an unexpected and devastating setback: we had been sold the wrong property. The land we had nurtured and fallen in love with in fact not ours, and what was ours was a parcel of land that we had never looked at. What we actually purchased was a wooded, boggy parcel that seemed nearly impossible to farm.

But giving up was never an option. Over the following 90 days, with sheer determination, community support, and countless hours of hard labor, we transformed the swampy, overgrown land into a functioning farm. It was an arduous season filled with challenges, but we persevered, completing our third season with a renewed sense of purpose and resilience. Our fourth and fifth seasons continued to provide more challenges than results, as we struggled to access water, and work under resourced, completely off-grid.

Now entering our sixth season, we are thrilled to have running water, necessary resources, and oodles of support. Every seed planted and harvested this season will be a reminder of the journey we’ve taken and the vision we continue to build: nurturing the land, fostering connections between people and nature, and growing food and fiber sustainably.

Food

The farm strives to provide fresh nourishing food to community members far and wide through CSA, Farmers Markets, local retail, and equitable food opportunities. These days the farm is growing bountiful amounts of veggies year round, offering the freshest of greens even on the coldest of West MI winter days! We are excited to integrate more value added products to the farms offerings including fresh honey, maple syrup, and herbal creations straight from the farm.

Food access is deeply ingrained within the farms mission to provide folks with fresh, local, and sustainable food as well as the resources to prepare it. We are excited to continue to support food access by offering on farm EBT payments + EBT CSA shares!

Flowers

Sam’s original dream was to “grow flowers and be happy.” Back in the day, that correlated to picking wildflowers alongside the dirt road ditches and selling them at a rickety roadside stand for $1. These days, the dreams have expanded into well over 100 varieties of flowers + foliage.Walking amongst the brilliant blooms on a bright sunshiny day is an absolute dream. These days, we are sharing these blooms through CSA bouquets, Market arrangements, Wholesale+event buckets, and floral workshops throughout the season. Guarantee yourself flowers all season long with a floral CSA, or prepare ahead for a big event with a wholesale bucket!

Also debuting in 2023 is our u-cut flower garden! We have cleared space and will be breaking ground in spring of 2023 to provide folks with a u-cut opportunity out at the farm!

Fiber

we are proud to produce sustainable, high-quality fiber from our flock of jacobs sheep and angora rabbits. Our sheep provide wool that reflects their natural, chemical-free care, while our rabbits contribute luxurious, hand-harvested angora fiber. Every step, from animal care to fiber processing, is rooted in ethical and biodynamic practices, ensuring the health of our animals and the quality of our fiber. Whether spun into yarn or crafted into other products, our fiber embodies the connection between land, animals, and the art of slow, intentional production.

Our sheep are rotationally grazed on pasture, and are being worked into our silvopasture efforts.

Our angora rabbits are new to the farm and playing a role in farm trials to see how they impact heat and soil health in our high tunnel for season extension. During the months of October - May, the rabbits exist in a built out free range space at the each end of the high tunnel, managing cover crop. During June - September, the rabbits are tractored out on pasture where they can forage throughout the day.
